বঙ্গোপসাগর থেকে গত অর্থবছরে সাড়ে ছয় লাখ মেট্রিক টন মাছ ধরা হয়েছে। এটি দেশের মোট মৎস্য সম্পদের ১৬ ভাগ। মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদমন্ত্রী আশরাফ আলী খান খসরু আজ মঙ্গলবার এ কথা জানিয়েছেন।
‘বাংলাদেশ ব্লু ইকোনমি ডায়ালগ অন ফিশারিজ অ্যান্ড লাইভ স্টক’ শীর্ষক দুই দিনব্যাপী কর্মশালায় এ কথা বলেন মন্ত্রী। রাজধানীর একটি হোটেলে আজ এই কর্মশালা শুরু হয়। মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ মন্ত্রণালয় এবং জাতিসংঘের খাদ্য ও কৃষি সংস্থা (এফএও) যৌথভাবে এ আয়োজন করে।

আশরাফ আলী খান খসরু বলেন, ‘বঙ্গোপসাগরে ৪৭৫ প্রজাতির মাছসহ ৩৬ প্রজাতির চিংড়ি এবং বিভিন্ন প্রকার অর্থনৈতিক ও জৈব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পদ আছে। ২০১৭-১৮ সালে দেশে উৎপাদিত মোট ৪৩ লাখ ৩৪ হাজার মাছের মধ্যে সাড়ে ৬ লাখ মেট্রিকটনই এসেছে সমুদ্র থেকে।’

মন্ত্রী আরও বলেন, প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার প্রচেষ্টায় ভারত ও মিয়ানমারের এক লাখ ১৮ হাজার ৮১৩ বর্গকিলোমিটার এলাকা বাংলাদেশের সমুদ্রসীমায় যুক্ত হয়েছে। এতে পরিবেশের ভারসাম্য রক্ষা, জলবায়ুর ক্ষতিকর প্রভাব থেকে উত্তরণ এবং অর্থনৈতিক সমৃদ্ধি অর্জনের ক্ষেত্রে সামুদ্রিক সম্পদের গুরুত্ব ও অপার সম্ভাবনার দ্বার উন্মোচিত হয়েছে। তিনি আরও বলেন, উপকূলীয় অঞ্চলের ৫ লক্ষাধিক জেলে প্রায় ৭০ হাজার যান্ত্রিক ও অযান্ত্রিক নৌযানের সহায়তায় জীবিকা নির্বাহ করছেন। সেই সঙ্গে মৎস্য উৎপাদনে ব্যাপক ভূমিকা রাখছেন।

মন্ত্রী জানান, আরভি মীন সন্ধানী নামের সমুদ্র গবেষণা ও জরিপ-জাহাজের মাধ্যমে সমুদ্রের চিংড়িসহ তলদেশীয় ও উপরস্থ মাছের জরিপের কাজও চলছে।

কর্মশালায় মূল প্রবন্ধ পাঠ করেন, এফএওর প্রতিনিধি জ্যাকুলিন এলদার। মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ মন্ত্রণালয়ের সচিব রইছউল আলম মণ্ডলের সভাপতিত্বে এতে বক্তব্য দেন, এফএওর বাংলাদেশ প্রতিনিধি রবার্ট ডলাস সিম্পসন, পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের মেরিটাইম অ্যাফেয়ার্স ইউনিটের সচিব রিয়াল অ্যাডমিরাল (অব.) খুরশেদ আলম, নরওয়ের রাষ্ট্রদূত সিডসেল ব্লেকিন, মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ মন্ত্রণালয়ের যুগ্মসচিব (ব্লু-ইকোনমি) তৌফিকুল আরিফ, মৎস্য অধিদপ্তরের মহাপরিচালক আবু সাইদ মো. রাশেদুল হক।

রাত তখন সাড়ে ৩টা। আগুন নেভাতে ব্যস্ত ফায়ার সার্ভিসের কর্মীরা।
